“Searching For Athens”

Art Works by Todd Lowery, 2008-2015

Athens, Greece - The Hub Events at Thission Lofts Exhibition Space is pleased to present “Searching for Athens” by Artist and Drury University Professor Todd Lowery. This collection of works will feature drawings, paintings, and photographic prints that have been made from 2008 to 2015 and are inspired by the city of Athens. The exhibition will be on view 4-10 December at Thission Lofts Exhibition Space (123 Pireos Avenue) with a reception to be held on 5 December 2015 from 19:00-23:00. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Todd Lowery first visited Greece in 2007 and was immediately fascinated by the frenetic energy, the deep history, and the culture of contemporary Athens. Since then, the city has become a primary source of inspiration and provided the basis for three distinct bodies of work:

Stin Pira (“Into the Pyre”, 2009-2011), a series of acrylic paintings on paper that center on civil unrest as viewed through web-based imagery representation.

Enoikiazetai (“For Rent”, 2013), a series of photographic images focusing on vacated storefronts and businesses. The images present concurrent elements of pre-crisis wealth and post-economic change, and showcase the impact the crisis has had on the affluent seaside Athens suburb of Glyfada.

Stratografia (“Layered Marks”, 2012-2015), a body of work that is informed by experiences of Greek landscape and Athenian urban fabric. The paintings connect, reflect, and interpret, at different orders of magnitude, layers of human-built structures, past and present. They engage a sense of place, site, and time, and allude to a tension between coalescence and unraveling. Landscape, archeological strata, urban fabric, architectural form, light, painted surface, graffiti, and the detritus of the lived environment are all at play.

“Searching for Athens” includes pieces from each of these three series, but also a few stylistically anomalous works, in a variety of drawing and painting media. As a mini-retrospective, the exhibition represents one artist’s journey to explore his experiences, relationships, and understandings of the complex, sometimes challenging, but undeniably charismatic place that is Athens.
